Climate
in Eastern Himalaya
The Himalayan climate varies according to
elevation. It gets colder as elevation increases and gets wetter
as the elevation drops. As a result the temperature and climatic
changes in the Himalayan regions change very quickly. Rain is
common in the Hills. It may come without notice, but except
for the monsoon it may not last very long. During Monsoon (July
– August) the region gets heavy shower and landslide is common
occurrence. River crossing should be undertaken with extreme
caution during this season. Every year a number of death takes
place because of the high current of the river.
The
two major seasons of the Himalayan region are winter and summer.
During the winter the region receives the maximum snow with
very icy temperatures. The snowline in Eastern Himalaya is higher
than other areas. During Summer the snow starts at altitude
of 17 to 18 thousand feet. During winter the snow line comes
down sharply to altitude of 9 – 10 thousand feet. Summer is
mild here, making the places quiet good summer holiday.
The weather in the lower Himalaya is suitable
for tourists anytime during the year except July August when
the Monsoon is in its full flurry. The winter months of January
and February are not very popular because of the cold. But it
is an ideal time if you want to visit the hills without jostling
in tourist crowd. Besides this is the time when views of the
mountains are the clearest. Higher altitude destinations are
mostly closed to tourists during August September due to heavy
rain and again in January February due to heavy snow. The rest
of the year is fine for visiting these places. |
