Goechala
While Dzongri
is a landmark of a major trekking destination, it is however,
not the culmination of the journey for one who wants to explore
further. You will find the terrain changing its character from
here as the climb becomes more steady and easier.
The trek from Dzongri to Goecha-la has all
the ingredients of alpine spectacle at high altitudes. Thansing,
located at 3800 m, is a moderate climb surrounded by towering
peaks and dwarf rhododendron blossoms. After crossing the bridge
over the Prek Chu River you reach Thansing
located below the slopes of Mt. Pandim. There is a trekkers
hut at Thansing where you can rest, or camp along the banks
of the Prek Chu River.
As
you trek a few hours from Thansing, which is a steady incline
surrounded by giant peaks of the Kanchenjunga Range, you reach
the emerald green Samiti Lake. Besides, the
beautiful lake you are offered with a very close view of the
surrounding mountains and glaciers.
The ascending path from Samiti Lake takes
you to Goecha La, a mountain pass between Nepal and India formed
by a depression of two mountain ridges. Standing here and gazing
at the magnificent Kanchenjunga, you will feel that you can
almost touch the white snow clad body of the mountain.
The
trail that climbs towards the Goecha La pass will get your adrenaline
pumping because the path here is not wider than six inches.
The cliff overlooks a massive network of glacial moraines and
the landscape here will transport you to another world. While
walking through the glacial beds and along the moraines you
will feel like you are in a lunar landscape formed of white
dunes – the barren landscape accentuates the effect.
If you are lucky enough to have a clear sky
and have planned your journey well, you will never forget the
experience of this trek for a long time to come. Infact, you
will come back for more, again.
