Damthang
/Tendong – Silent vistas
Damthang to Tendong is a short one-day trek.
As you observe the heavenly peace and silence of this place,
you will know why Buddhist Lamas chose this place for meditation
and reflection.
Damthang is an hour’s drive from Ravangla
and if you choose to, you can combine this hike with the one
from Ravangla to Mainam.
Damthang is located at an altitude of 1650 meters above sea
level.
Towards the north east of Damthang is the
Tendong Hill (8530 ft.) covered by verdant forests, it is also
considered
to be a dormant volcano. Tendong hill in Lepcha dialect mean
the hill of the raised horn, legend has it that when the land
was submerged in the great floods, the horn rose miraculously
to save the people. The place was a favorite recluse for Buddhist
Lamas to meditate because of its peaceful grandeur.
You will have a magnificent view of the Kangchendzonga,
the Chola peaks, Singalila Range and the plains of Bengal. This
trek is also ideal for a picnic or relaxation for troubled minds.
Laying down in the lap of nature you will definitely feel the
urge to introspect about your life here. Enjoy the silence that
speaks more than words.
