Location:
Khangchendzonga National Park (KNP) named after the third highest
peak in the world Mount Khangchendzonga (8585m/28600ft) lies
in North and West
District of Sikkim covering an area of 2192 Sq Km. It occupies
almost 20% of the land mass of Sikkim.
The park in the West district starts from
Yuksom (6000ft) and reaches
at the Summit at a distance of 45 kms. In North District it
covers almost the entire portion combining all major places
like Lachen, Thangu, Gurudongma,
Muguthang, Chopta Valley,
Green Lake, and upper ridges of Dzongu.
There are three main entry points to this park- Yuksom in West
Sikkim, Dzongu and Lachen in North Sikkim.

Landscape
and Attractions
Khangchendzonga National Park owing to it unparallel rich bio-diversity
was notified as a Biosphere reserve by the ministry of Environment
and Forests of India in the year 2000. Khangchendzonga Reserve
is considered one of the highest and most inaccessible Biosphere
Reserves in the world. The altitudinal variation of this park
harbors an innumerable floral and faunal species, a large number
of which are endemic to this region and are very much rare.
The park extends from Temperate to Alpine
zone. Its diverse tropical mixed broad-leaved forest, sub-alpine
conifer and rhododendron forests, alpine meadow, streams, glaciers,
lakes and some of the gorgeous peaks of Himalayas mark the landscape
of Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve. The uniqueness of this
park lies in the fact that each of the altitudinal zones offers
characteristic vegetation and live forms of its own. It has
more than 550 species and subspecies of birds, which is nearly
30% of the entire bird families found in the entire sub-continent.

Park is a haven of the most rare Himalayan faunal species like
Snow Leopard, Musk Deer, Blue Sheep or Bharal, Shapu, Tibetan
Antelope, Clouded Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Red Panda,
Himalayan Wild Ass etc.
Imperial Pheasant, Blood Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan,
Osprey, Lammergeyer, Sunbirds etc are to be named among the
most important bird species found in the region.
Trekking in Khangchendzonga National Park
The Khangchendzonga National Park has been in the prime Trekking
Maps in the entire world for its magnificent landscape. The
park offers some of the adventures trek routes in Sikkim. The
most famous trek route starts from Yuksam and leads to the serene
landscape towards-
Bakhim, Dzongri, Tsokha,
Thansing, Khangchendzonga Base Camp and Goecha la
More adventurous trek starts from Lachen to the famous Green
Lake via Lucanes, Jakchen, Yabuk and Rest Camp.
The most treacherous trek in the Park perhaps
Lachen (9000ft) - Thangu (13,695ft) Muguthang (16,000ft) - Thay
La (17,000ft) - Khyoksa La (18,000ft) Rest Camp - Green Lake.
Green lake is fast developing into a take off point for mountaineering
expeditions to the surrounding peaks.
All these trek routes allow the trekkers to
have an unbelievable experience to the largest continuous tract
of mountainous land with valleys of lush green forests, alpine
meadows, a luxuriant flora and fauna of rare varieties in the
primitive wilderness, natural glacial lakes, rivers and streams,
vast flowering fields, imposing canyon and snow clad peaks and
mountains.
