The International Ecotourism Society (TIES)
defines ecotourism as a socially responsible type of tourism
or travel to natural areas that provides pleasure and ensures
the well-being of the local people as well.
Ecotourism is part of a wide spectrum of tourism
activities that comes under sustainable tourism. Such type of
tourism is aimed to meet the needs of the present generation
without compromising the needs of the future generation.
Some general principles should be followed
in implementation, like minimizing impact and providing positive
experience to both the tourist and the host. It should aim at
building environmental and cultural awareness with mutual respect.
It should also provide financial benefits to conservation and
empower the local people. Provide exposure to the political,
environmental and social problems faced by the host’s country
and support international human rights.
