The cultural diversity of the people in the
northeast India is well known but not very well documented.
naturebeyond members has been engaged with community tourism
and has village level contact with the different ethnic communities
of the region. We organize village tours and cultural tours
in the tribal villages of north-Bengal and Sikkim. Description
about some of the different social communities of the region
is given below.
Nepali Community
The Nepalese are the major community in Sikkim - Darjeeling
region. They started to migrate in Sikkim long after the Bhutia
settlement. The Nepali community consists of different tribes
such as the Limta, Gurung, Magar, Rai, Tamang, Mewar etc. more
Bhutia Community
The Bhutias are the people originally from Tibet who
entered Sikkim through Bhutan and settled in higher altitudes.

Rajbansi
Community
The Rajbansis are mainly concentrated in the Terai and Dooars
region in Jalpaiguri District. Considered to be one of the sixteen
numerically important schedule castes of the state. more
Mech Community
The Mech people come under the broader Boro group of Eastern
India. According to the anthropologists the Meches and the Coches
belong to the same stock. more
Lepcha Community
The
word Lepcha, or Lapche means the people of vile speech and was
a contemptuous appellation given to this tribe by the dominant
Nepalese. more
Rava Community
Rava or Rabha tribes of North Bengal are a deep-rooted
faith that they have inherited from their forefathers that revolve
around the world of deities and spirits. Like most tribal societies
they have their set of community activities to ensure safety,
security and prosperity. more
Drukpa Community
The people of Bhutan are called Drukpas, derived from
the name of the country, DRUK YUL, land of the Thunder Dragon.
The Drukpas consist of a variety of ethnicity that are mainly
categorized into three broad ethnic groups. more
Sherpa Community
Since mountaineering in the high Himalayas has been
an international sport, the Sherpas of Darjeeling have attained
world wide fame as tough porters and experts guides in high
altitudes. Sherpa is a Tibetan word meaning, simply, 'an easterner'.
