Handicraft
 The
Dooars is famous for its handicraft and the artisans. In villages
across Dooars, expert artisans produce excellent Handicraft
items using Wood, Jute, Bamboo and Cane. Much of the produce
is sold locally. Every year Dooars artisans participate in major
Handicraft fairs in the major Metros to showcase their artifacts.
A small part is also exported through middlemen.
The major problem faced by
the artisans is abysmally low price that they receive. The artisans
do not have good direct marketing channels and has to depend
on brokers. The end consumer pays a reasonable price but the
margin is mostly eaten up by the middle men. Government and
voluntary organizations have come forward to help the artisans.
Permanent kiosks has been set up in Siliguri, Calcutta and some
other major cities. But the effort has fallen short of requirement
so far.
One of the voluntary organizations involved
in this process is NESPON.
Members of the organization contact the artisans at village
level and collect the produce from them. The products are sold
directly and thus ensuring higher return for the artisans. Some
