| Kurseong
The literary meaning of Kurseong is 'The Land
of White Orchids'. Kurseong is Situated at a distance of 51
kilometers from Siliguri on the way
to Darjeeling. Kurseong is not
as famous as Darjeeling but still has a few surprises for the
tourists.
The town has traditionally attracted people
from the plains as a summer sojourn. Kurseong has served a number
of Indian and foreign artists, poets, social reformers and patriots.
The list includes Rabindra Nath Tagore, Subhash Chandra Bose,
Sister Nivedita, Atul Prasad Sen and many more. The century-old-schools
of Kurseong are also famous for providing excellent standard
of education. Schools like St. Mary's School, St. Helen's School
for Girls, Victoria Boys' School and Himali Boarding School
(Co-education) are the most reputed ones.
The
town is situated at an altitude of 4864 ft. Kurseong covers
an area of about 5 square kilometers. With an average annual
rainfall of about 160 inches, Kurseong has a cool winter.
In Kurseong one can see some worldclass tea
gardens. The views of the Kunchenjunga is very attractive.
History
Behind this energetic and modern Kurseong
town lies a history of transformation. In 1835 the King of Sikkim
yielded this small province to the British Government. The small
village came to common notice when the Darjeeling
Himalayan Railway (DHR) extended its railway tracks up to
Kurseong on 25th August, 1880. DHR set up the Headquarters of
the Sub-Divisions in Kurseong.

Deer Park: The Deer Park or the Forest Museum is 4 kilometers
from the town on the Dow Hill. This is an attractive amusement
park.
Eagle's Craig: This spot is famous for the views of sunset
and the sunrise. It is about 1 kilometer from the Rail Station.
Giddapahar Mandir: This is a holy place for the local.
This temple of the God Shiva is situated 2 kilometers away from
the town. In every Shivratri a mela is organized there.
