| Ghoom
A small township at an elevation of 7,400
ft 8 kms before Darjeeling town
is an important business centre. The location of Ghoom being
in a gap between hills makes it an extremely rainy, misty and
wind-swept place.
Ghoom has a Railway Station under Darjeeling
Himalayan Railway (DHR). Standing at a height of 7407 ft
above sea level the small Toy-Train station is the highest station
in India. Being situated at the tri-junction of three main roads
namely, the Hill Cart Road connecting Siliguri,
Peshok Road connecting Kalimpong
via Tista Bazaar and other proceeding to Mirik
via Sukhi Pokhri and Simana in Nepal Boarder, Ghoom is an important
centre for orange and cardamom trade.
Ghoom
has an old Bhuddhist Monastery, which displays many colourful
frescoes on its walls and houses a massive image of Buddha and
a large number of Tibetan Manuscripts.
Batasia Loop situated on a flat top overlooking
the majestic Kunchenjungha ranges near the Ghoom station is
an immensely popular tourist spot. There is war memorial at
the centre of the Loop. The entire area is decorated with beautiful
gardens. The famous joy ride on Heritage toy train makes a complete
circle here through the gardens. |
