The Helmet
Type
Biking helmets are basically of two types, hard shell
and soft shell. The principle difference is that a Hard-shell
helmets have thin plastic surface, while soft-shell helmets
have only a soft foam surface. We prefer hard shell helmets
because when a hard shelled helmet hits rough ground it
skids rather than catching on the ground, this may save
the neck in a worst possible scenario.
A helmet which has already suffered a crash should not
be reused. An impact may damage a helmet's foam, and it
may not protect you well enough in the future. naturebeyond
supplies hard shell helmets for its biking tours. We suggest
bringing personal helmets if available since our helmets
are only of one size.
What to look for in a helmet
Fit:You must have a good fit. A good fit means that if
your head is hit more than once, the helmet will stay
in place. Most brands of adult helmets come in two or
three sizes, and you can make them fit even better by
adjusting the straps. Don’t wear helmet tilted back on
head, it won't protect your head in a frontal impact.
How to Check For A Good Fit
1. The helmet should sit level on your head.
2. As you move your head after fastening the helmet, the
helmet should not move around on your head
3. With the straps tight, you shouldn’t be able to remove
the helmet.
Ventilation: A helmet's ventilation
depends on front-to-back flow. Good air flow comes from
long, wide air vents, and air passages (otherwise known
as troughs) between the vents. |
